Hello [REPRESENTATIVE],

I hope you’re doing well! My name is [NAME] and I’m reaching out as a proud Ann Arborite and concerned [citizen/parent/other]. Although we claim to be a city built on equitable laws and progressive values, we are failing the youngest members of our community. This is because currently, Ann Arbor does not guarantee universal preschool coverage for all children — and the underfunded Great Start Program does not offer a viable solution.

The research is solid. Piles of evidence show that preschool helps young children develop independence and respect for others. Furthermore, students who attend preschool program go on to graduate at higher rates and earn higher incomes than those who don’t. And finally, children who attend preschool commit less crimes than those who don’t. Even more importantly, all of these effects are amplified for children from lower socioeconomic groups.

Not only will the above benefits improve the life chances of these children, and free up more time for the parents of these kids, but it will also create a more equitable and prosperous Ann Arbor — making universal preschool a worthwhile investment. According to one study, every $1 that cities spend on preschool yields a return of $6.30. That’s money that can fund various programs and initiatives to improve our city.

The evidence is strong: preschool works. I believe that Ann Arbor should guarantee preschool for all of city’s children in order to create a more fair and prosperous future. Please reach out with any concerns, and I hope you consider this email.

Best,

[NAME]
